This is my polite way of referring to that instinctive safety mechanism we all have, our BS meter. I searched the internet for polite alternatives to BS and almost immediately found this from equire.com. From that I then confirmed the word in Merriam-Webster as:
Trumpery derives from the Middle English trompery and ultimately from the Middle French tromper, meaning “to deceive.” (You can see the meaning of this root reflected in the French phrase trompe-l’oeil-literally, “deceives the eye”-which in English refers to a style of painting with photographically realistic detail.) Trumpery first appeared in English in the mid-15th century with the meanings “deceit or fraud” (a sense that is now obsolete) and “worthless nonsense.” Less than 100 years later, it was being applied to material objects of little or no value. The verb phrase trump up means “to concoct with the intent to deceive,” but there is most likely no etymological connection between this phrase and trumpery.

My trumpery meter has been going higher and higher over the last four years as #45 started redefining the presidency as an outlet for all manner of outrageous untruths. This has fostered a new growth industry spread via the internet which spouts a continual commentary on pending changes with many now linked to the continuance of #45’s presidency despite a fair election defeat. They also proclaim many amazing things attributed to his time in office that have never been revealed to you and me or to the general public. They also demonise things like socialism and portray anything other than fascism as the “radical left”. It is starting to sound a lot like 1930’s Germany.

I am writing this on the 18th January 2021 in Sydney, Australia, so we should have a fairly short wait to see how many, if any, of the above forecasts come to fruition. It has sent my trumpery meter just about off the scale. But what I find astounding is how many people have become hooked into this and descended into these “rabbit holes”. The same people who I thought would have an even more sensitive trumpery meter than mine.
I found this chart which covers many of the issues that have been setting my meter off.
How many of these will still remain as widespread after the US presidential inauguration we will have to wait and see. I can only hope that the influence of our collective trumpery meters will start to take effect as the influence of potentially the greatest con man in recorded history declines.
